HIKER ALERT !

SYRINGE NEEDLES FOUND ON STATEN ISLAND BEACHES!

On Tuesday February 20th your webmaster attended a private hike lead by Ray Krant a long time leader for the Outdoors Club. We did a beach hike from South Beach to Great Kills Beach. At TWO SEPARATE LOCATIONS we found medical Syringes in the sand. One had the needle still intact. After finding the first, we naturally were afraid how to carry it out. Near the needle I then found a plastic container in the sand to put the needle in. We used this again latter when  Oliver Wayne, who is also a hike leader for our club found the second one. These articles were also witnessed by our assistant Webmaster Lou Miller who was also on the hike. The container may or may not be a part of medical waste washed up on our shores. The STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE and the City Environmental Commissioner's Office have been notified.

This is no joke and all who do Beach Walks should take the proper precautions.
