7/1 ROOSEVELT ISLAND TO ASTORIA, 5 miles, moderate steady pace, some ups/downs. End walk at Uncle George’s Restaurant 2 blocks from N subway. Meet 1:15 PM (after lunch) near token booth stop on Roosevelt Island. Bring beverage. Take F subway or Q102 bus to subway stop. Heavy Rain Cancels! 7/4 WED, CROTON POINT PARK. 7 miles, circular hike, easy. Hike the trails with great views of the Hudson Valley. Enjoy the 4th of July events (we may stay late, optional). Bring lunch/plenty water and snacks. NO SMOKING ON HIKE. From GCT (42nd St.) take the Hudson Line train at 10:51 AM to Croton Harmon OR from Marble Hill (near 225th St. Sta., subway #1) at 11:10, arriving at 11:38 (TIME CHANGES, CHECK SCHEDULE). 7/4 WED, PALISADES, 7-8 miles, brisk pace, 1 tough descent, 2 tough ascents, 1 rock scramble, mostly trails. Come celebrate July 4 with a brisk hike on the Long Path and other trails for a thrilling trip along the crest and along the shore path of the majestic Palisades. We’ll do the Long Path from the Boy Scout Camp to the fence at State Line, descend to the Shore Path and do the Giant Stairs (rock scramble); afterwards ascending on Closter Dock Path. Long Path gets muddy after rain. Bring lunch and water. Rain and/or 95+ deg cancel. Meet leader at commuter statue in Port Authority (or board bus at GW Bridge terminal). 7/4 WED, JONES BEACH HIKE, DINNER, FIREWORKS. Hike along the sands in the Zachs Bay area; then return to cars to collect picnic stuff: food, blankets, etc. Head to the beach to enjoy dinner, conversation, and fireworks. (Bring dinner, the line to buy is huge.) After the fireworks we will leisurely walk the boardwalk until the parking lot empties. We’ll pass the bus stop. Meet at parking lot 5, Zachs Bay, at 6:30 pm, at eastern end by the tunnel leading to the east bathhouse, on the parking lot side of the tunnel. There is a bus/LIRR package. Ask bus driver to let you off at the East Bathhouse – walk west in front of the building to the tunnel leading under the road – it leads to the East end of the parking lot 5. 7/7 SAT, SLOATSBURG-HARRIMAN STATE PARK, 10 miles. We will follow some trails around to Pine Meadow Lake, then to Lake Sebago and back to the station. LATE RETURN. Bring lunch and extra food and drink plus a flashlight, which should always be with you on a woodland hike. Meet at Penn Station at LIRR waiting room on lower level (as this is an easier place to find each other). We will take NJ Transit train to Sloatsburg and back. 7/7 SAT, BROOKLYN BOTANIC GARDEN, PROSPECT PARK, 5-miles, moderate pace, mostly flat. Meet at 10 am in front of Eastern Pkwy entrance to Gardens. Take #2 or 3 to Eastern Parkway. 7/8 SUN, TIBBETS BROOK PARK, 4 miles. We will walk along the old Putnam Division RR right of way. Bring food and water. Meet at 242nd Street and Broadway, park side, at 12 noon. Take #1 subway to last stop. Leader: George Glatz (212-533-9457, 7-8 am). Joint hike.
7/8 SUN, GREYSTONE TO HASTINGS, 7 miles. Moderate hike on OCA & several side trails in nearby parks. We begin with a 150 ft street climb and then an additional uphill to a lookout point in Untermeyer Park. Later we return to OCA and another 150 ft. stair climb to Lenior Preserve. From there we go north via a series of inter-connected parks and finish in Hastings. Take1:20 pm train at GCT to Greystone, arr. 1:57 pm. Drivers park near the Greystone Sta (Warbuton & Harriman Ave, North end of Yonkers) near Hudson River. Call answering machine, hike msg begins 7/2 (to confirm hike is going). 7/11 WED, SCENIC HUDSON RIVER EVENING WALK, 3 miles, moderate pace, level walking. Walk along scenic Hudson River, stop at Little Red Lighthouse under the GW Bridge. Continue on level path towards Riverbank State Park. Bring snack and water. Meet at 5:45 pm at 181st St and Ft. Washington Ave by Starbucks. Take A-train (last car) to 181st St Station, take escalator to street and cross street. Leaders: Sam and Esther Dorfman, NO CALLS. Rain cancels. Joint hike. Nonmembers: $3.
7/11 WED, GRAND ARMY PLAZA TO ATLANTIC OCEAN, 8 miles, brisk pace, 1 climb, mostly sidewalks. After looking at the beautiful Grand Army Plaza area we’ll explore Prospect Park, taking in the Long Meadow, Upper Ponds, Audubon Center and climb Lookout Hill (highest point in Park) where we’ll have a scavenger hunt (letterboxing). Then it’s through the Ditmas Park neighborhood (beautiful and historic Victorian homes and Mansions), through Midwood and Sheepshead Bay – crossing the footbridge over Sheepshead Bay into Manhattan Beach and the ocean. Optional early dinner at an authentic Chinese restaurant on Ave U after hike. Meet at the 7th Ave stop of the Q/B train on the west side of Flatbush Ave at 10:30 am. 7/14 SAT, ROCKEFELLER STATE PRESERVE, 7-8 miles, moderate pace, ups and downs. Bring lunch and water. Wear hiking boots. No drop-off points, and out around 5 pm. Meet at 10:15 at Philipse Manor train station -- take the 9:20 AM train from Grand Central (9:40 from Marble Hill). Leader: Patti Rosen, 718-855-9328. Message on answering machine. 7/14 SAT, GLEN ISLAND TO THE BRONX VIA PELHAM, approx. 5 miles, moderate steady pace, some road walking. We’ll walk around Glen Island in New Rochelle and stop for lunch. After lunch we will explore the town of Pelham and then walk back to the Bronx. Bring lunch/water. Heavy rain cancels! Meet 11 AM at IRT #6 Pelham Bay station token booth (last stop in Bronx) to catch W45 Bee-Line bus to New Rochelle (MetroCard). Return via Bx16 bus to #2 subway. 7/15 SUN, DELAWARE AND RARITAN CANAL, 8 miles, flat, moderate pace. A pleasant, mostly shady summertime walk along the historic Delaware and Raritan Canal from New Brunswick to Bound Brook, NJ. We will go through picturesque Johnson Park and along the tow-path of the canal. Bring lunch and at least 1 quart of water, 2 quarts if very hot. Meet at NJ Transit ticket windows in Penn Station (new concourse near 7th Ave) at 9:50 am for 10:14 train to New Brunswick. Fare: $9.50 each way, seniors $4.25. Leader: Paul Develet (516-488-5232). 7/15 SUN, BIKE RIDE TO PROSPECT PARK, easy pace, some hills, distance to be determined by participants. Take a leisurely bike ride to Prospect Park. Picnic lunch, bring or buy food. Must have helmet, repair kit, bike pump, spare inner tube, and bike lock. Inclement weather cancels. For meeting place and time call leader by Friday, July 13. 7/15 SUN, TALLMAN MOUNTAIN STATE PARK TO NYACK (hike and swim), 8 miles. A delightful day awaits us here. We will walk in the park on the bike path followed by a swim at the pool. Then, on to the Long Path and the pier in Piermont. Spectacular views of the Hudson River and the Tappan-Zee Bridge. Brief stop in ice cream parlor. Continue on shady and very pleasant Long path to Nyack for a delicious moderately priced meal at Mexican restaurant. Bring water, snacks, and sunscreen. LATE RETURN. Meet at the Commuters sculpture in PABT. Purchase one-way ticket on bus to Palisades Oak Tree Road; return ticket can be bought on the bus in Nyack. Bring bathing suit and quarters for lockers. 7/21 SAT, TAXTER RIDGE PRESERVE. A new 7-8 mile hike on marked trails, hilly but flat at the end. Big forest with brooks. View of a rose garden, we’ll continue on the aqueduct. Bring lunch/plenty water. NO SMOKING ON HIKE. Take IRT # 1 train to 242nd St., last stop and meet downstairs by park to take bus W1 to Tarryhill Rd at 11:00 AM, arriv. around 11:50. 7/21 SAT, LIBERTY STATE PARK, NJ, evening walk 9 miles. Enjoy an evening at Liberty Park with its breathtaking sunset views of NYC. A real treat. Meet at turnstiles at 32nd St & 6th Ave at 7 pm to take the Path train to Grove Street. Please bring a picnic dinner to enjoy in the park. Fare: $1.50 each way. 7/22 SUN, BRONX CITY WALK, about 4 miles - Walk across the middle of the Bronx. Visit various neighborhoods to view architecture, styles of housing, city parks, historical sites, transportation facilities, and the newest city public library. Includes visit to site of the new Yankee stadium. Lunch stop included. Bring unlimited MetroCard & water. 7/23 MON, HASTINGS AFTERNOON HIKE, 5 miles. Meet at 10:57 am near Hastings taxi stand. We will hike on portions of the inter-connected hiking trails system (Zinnzer, Hillside Woods, Burke Estate and the Old Croton Aqueduct). Pizzeria, Diner & Ice Cream Parlor available after hike. 7/28 – 7/29 SAT/SUN, FAST PACKING – TUXEDO TO BEAR MOUNTAIN. Fast Packing is hiking with only a minimum of equipment. You will only need a few items plus food for this overnight adventure. We will follow in the footsteps of the people who started the NY/NJ Trail Conference and hike the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail to Tioroti Circle where we will stay the first night. 7/28 SAT, DYCKMAN STREET TO 72ND STREET, 7-10 miles, moderate, some hills and several flights of stairs. There is only one drop-off point at 125th Street. Walk along the Northern portion of the Hudson River path, see the “Little Red Lighthouse Under the Big Bridge” (if we are lucky we may be able to go into the lighthouse with the park rangers). Bring lunch/water. Enjoy great views of the Hudson and the beautiful cherry walk. Please call any time 72 hours prior to the walk for meeting place and time. 7/28 SAT, PIERMONT TO NYACK. Mostly Long Path, 8-9 miles, moderate pace w/some climbs. Journey through old Nike Missile base, northward to Nyack. Bring lunch/plenty of water. Optional dinner at Village Inn. Meet 8 AM, PABT So. Wing at white commuter statues. Bus leaves 8:22, Gate 220, #9 bus o/w to Piermont, NY, return from Nyack. Cost: approx. $15/Srs w blue coupon half. 7/29 SUN, HIGH ROCK CONCERT HIKE, about 3 miles, some hills. We will take a variety of trails in the Greenbelt from Richmond Road & Rockland Ave to High Rock Park to attend a free outdoor concert by the Staten Island Chamber Music Society. Bring lunch and water, hiking boots recommended. Take 10:30 am SI Ferry from Manhattan. Take the S74 bus on Ramp B to Richmond Road & Rockland Ave where you will meet the leaders.
