10/6 SAT, LAMONT PRESERVE and LAMONT DOHERTY EARTH OBSERVATORY. 7 ½ miles hike, flat with small hills. Hike on the lovely trails. Possible display of raptors at the lookout. Later we’ll visit the annual fair on the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory grounds. Magnificent views of the Hudson River at fall foliage time. Bring Lunch/water. Wear Hiking Boots! NO SMOKING ON HIKE. Take A train to 175th St., GWBBT and meet at Red & Tan ticket window to take 10:40 AM C9 bus, Rte. 9W to Boy Scout Camp. Fare: O/W about $3. 10/6 SAT, BREEZY POINT BEACH HIKE, 11 miles, moderate pace. From 116th St Rockaway Park to Riis Park to Fort Tilden to Gateway National Park out to Breezy Point. Going back the same way. Ending hike at a Belle Harbor Italian bakery. Meet at last stop on A-train at Rockaway Park/Beach 116 stop at 10:30 am. Leader: Phil Tates (212-242-5384, after 7 pm). Nonmembers: $3.
10/6 SAT, HISTORICAL PS BUILDING FROM PARK SLOPE TO BAY RIDGE, about 10 miles. This walk looks at schools designed by architect Charles B.J. Snyder, Supt of School Building from 1891 – 1923. Replacing the factory/prison approach to education, his buildings embodied contemporary educational-reform concepts about light, fresh air, and play space for children coming out of crowded tenements. He saw schools as civic monuments. Meet at 10 am at the #2 or #3 Bergen Street stop, south side of Flatbush in Brooklyn. Bring lunch and water; frequent dropping off points. 10/7 SUN (RAINDATE 10/14) RED HOOK AND ART ON THE PIER. Take F train to Smith and 9th Street, meet at Street level. We’ll walk through parts of Red Hook, eat lunch on the water and end up at the Art Show. Also a chance to visit the new Fairway supermarket. Bring lunch and water. 10/7 SUN, GARRISON-ARDEN POINT & SUGAR LOAF SOUTH, 7 miles, steady moderate pace. We use a new route which avoids the road walking to Sugar Loaf South. A short lunch at the view point; then back to Arden Point with its Hudson River views for a second short lunch. Afterward a quick tour of Garrison Landing if there is any train waiting time. 10/8 MON (COLUMBUS DAY) UPPER MONTCLAIR TO VERONA, 8-9 miles, easy to moderate walking with some ups and downs. Hike through the wooded areas of Mills Reservation in Essex County, then on abandoned right-of-way with tracks removed for easy walking, and end up in scenic Verona Park. 10/8 MON, ALLEY POND PARK IN QUEENS. approx. 6 miles, easy/moderate pace. We’ll explore the many trails and ponds in this lovely park . Take F Subway to 179th St. and Hillside Avenue (last stop), then Q43 bus to Winchester Blvd. Meet 12:30 PM at Hillside Avenue and Winchester Blvd. Leader will meet you at Winchester Blvd. bus stop on south side of Hillside Avenue. 10/13 SAT, HARDSCRABBLE WILDERNESS AREA, Mountain Hike. 6-7 miles, some ups and downs (no climbing). Explore the beautiful trails with babbling brooks, and various trees. Bring lunch/plenty water. NO SMOKING ON HIKE. From GCT (42nd St), take Harlem Line exp. train at 9:48 AM to Pleasantville OR the local at 9:40 from Fordham (TIME CHANGES, CHECK SCHEDULE). Then a short ride on bus W19. 10/14 SUN, BRONX BOTANICAL GARDENS, about 4 miles. Enjoy the Fall in the Botanical Gardens. Meet at GCT near information at 10:50 am to take 11:23 am train. Fare: $9.50 RT, seniors $6. If you wish to take the subway, take D-train to Bedford Park Boulevard station and walk to the Moshulu gate of the Gardens. Meet us there at 11:44 am. Admission to the Gardens is $3. 10/14 SUN, NISSEQUOGUE RIVER SPECIAL, either 6 or 10 miles, moderate/brisk flat, hilly. Hike along hilly bluffs to Sunken Meadow with awesome view of Nissequogue River and LI Sound. Optional hike further south to Smithtown Landing. Bring lunch, water, wear hiking boots. Rain cancels. Take 9:14 am LIRR train from Penn Station to Kings Park. Fare: $19 RT, seniors $13. 10/14 SUN, DUMBO ART SHOW. Many exciting events will be in process when we visit DUMBO during the annual arts festival, incl. Open studios of resident artists. After Vinegar Hill, we will return to Brooklyn Heights with its architectural and historic interest. Optional lunch afterwards in Brooklyn Heights. Take R/2/3 to Court Street/Borough Hall station. 10/16 TUE, FLAT ROCK BROOK NATURE CENTER, 4 miles, moderate pace, some ups and downs. View ponds and gardens, walk on wood trails. Walk ¼ mile uphill along sidewalk from bus stop to Nature Center. Wear hiking boots, bring lunch and water. Meet at GW Bridge Bus Station near Red & Tan ticket window at 9:50 am to take 10:15 am bus #171 to Jones Road. Fare: $5 or $2.10 one way. 10/20 SAT, ASTORIA AND LITTLE LOOP IN LONG ISLAND CITY, 4-6 miles, flat terrain, easy to moderate pace. Start with a visit to the free Fisher-Landau art collection in LIC, then stop for lunch in a Greek or Cypriot restaurant on Broadway in Astoria. Following lunch, we will tour various points of interest in Astoria. Steady rain cancels. 10/20 SAT, KENSICO RESERVOIR, 8 miles, easy. Enjoy the Kensico Reservoir and the Catskill Aqueduct from Valhalla to Pleasantville. Bring lunch and water. The leaves should be turning orange and red. 10/21 SUN, ON THE WATERFRONT FROM THE HIGHLANDS TO LONG BRANCH. 8-mile, one-way, some ups and downs, moderate/steady paced mostly beach hike featuring isolated beachfronts, Twin Lights Historic Site, and spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean at the Jersey Shore. Bring lunch, plenty of water, sun protection, extra layers of clothing, extra socks, wear hiking boots. Bad weather cancels. Meet L 9:35 AM at the NJ Transit/Academy bus ticket windows near the commuter statues in the Port Authority Bus Terminal. We'll take the 10:00 AM Route 36 Academy bus from the PABT to the Highlands, arriving at 11:23 AM. (This is the last stop in the Highlands before the bridge). In the Highlands we'll first walk uphill to Twin Lights Historic Site and have lunch. At the end of the hike, we'll take the train from Long Branch and arrive back in Manhattan at about 6:20 PM. 10/27 SAT, FALL COLORS IN PRINCETON, NJ, 8 miles, mostly flat, moderate steady pace. A pleasant fall walk along the Delaware and Raritan Canal and Lake Carnegie, through Princeton Woods, past the places where Albert Einstein lived and worked, and ending at Princeton University. Bring lunch and water. Meet at white Commuters Statue in PA Bus Terminal at 8th Ave and 41st Street at 9;15 am for 9:30 am Suburban Bus to Kingston, NJ. 10/27 SAT, POCANTICO HILLS AND SURROUNDING AREA, 12-13 miles, easy to moderate hike. We will walk through Pocantico Hills area, starting with the mansions of Scarborough, going through the Aqueduct, Pocantico Hills, Lake and ending at the Tarrytown Reservoir. Bring lunch/water. 10/28 SUN, HISTORIC GRAVESEND, 3 miles, easy walk. We will see historic and interesting homes, learn about colonial history, walk on old paths, many drop-off points. Early dinner (optional). 10/28 SUN, MANITOU COPPER MINE, 10 miles, many ups and downs, steep bushwhacks, some road walking. From Peekskill red trail in Fort Hill Park, cross Gallows Hill; yellow, blue and while trails in Hudson Highlands Gateway Park. Continue west and explore mine site (aka Philips Mine). End at Manitou station. Hiking boots essential. Bring lunch and water. Rain cancels. NO DROP-OUT POINT, LATE RETURN. Meet at Grand Central Station information at 9:30 am. 10/31 WED, HAVERSTRAW TO MT. IVY, A hike along the Long Path. Hilly but real hikers will enjoy it. Not a fast pace, and stops to admire views. Meet at GCT to take 7:38 AM (check schedule times change) train to Ossining, then a ferry to Haverstraw. Return via bus. Rain, unless a heavy downpour, will not cancel. Bring food and drink.
