9/1 SAT, BAY RIDGE TO CHINATOWN VIA THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE, about 11 miles, industrial and residential city walk, drop-off points, moderate pace, coffee break. Dinner (optional) in Chinatown. Take the R subway to 86th Street in Brooklyn. Exit middle of train & go left at token booth. Meet 4 PM (after lunch & after bathrooms) on the corner of 86th Street & 4th Avenue. Bathrooms available on 86th St. at McDonald’s (430 86th St.) (walk towards 5th Avenue). Heavy Rain Cancels! 9/2 SUN, BOWERY CITY WALK, 2-3 miles, slow pace. The Bowery used to be a dilapidated and notorious place – now it is rebuilt into a fancy neighborhood. Let us take a look at the old and new and how we feel about it. Bring water. Meet at 14th Street and South East corner of 3rd Ave at 1:30 pm. Take any subway or bus to 14th St, then L train or bus to 3rd Ave. Leader: George Glatz (212-533-9457, 7-8 am). Joint walk.
9/2 Sunday: Welwyn Preserve Sunday of Labor day weekend at 10:00 AM

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS There are some hills but nothing to worry about, easy hike at moderate pace. Woods and beach. 9/3 MON, GREAT KILLS PARK/CROOKES POINT PRESERVE. Circular, 7 miles, easy flat with some short hills along the Green Belt, in preserves, on shore and beach with great view of the bay. Bring lunch/plenty water. Optional dinner in Chinatown upon return (place to be selected). NO SMOKING ON HIKE. Take any train to Staten Island Ferry (Manhattan side) and meet in Ferry waiting room to take 10:30 AM boat! Then SI train to Oakwood Hts Station. Fare: regular Metrocard. Return by bus. 9/3 MON, JONES BEACH. 4-6 miles. Walk on boardwalk and some trails. Bring bathing suit for possible swimming, also bring lunch, water, and suntan lotion. Old shoes or slippers are a good idea as we will be walking on the beach. Meet; 12:00 PM outside Freeport LIRR Station waiting room. Take LIRR train arriving Freeport at 11:46 AM (leaving Penn Station 11:02 AM or Jamaica 11:24 AM – check LIRR for schedule changes). Cost: $6.75/$4.50 o.w., plus MetroCard for bus. 9/8 SAT, GROVER CLEVELAND REMEMBRANCE WALK, WEST CALDWELL TO CALDWELL, NJ., 6-7 mostly flat miles on trails, some possibly muddy, and suburban streets – steady moderate pace. Start by walking through Hatfield Swamp, an extensive freshwater wetland along the Passaic River with abundant bird life. Remember our 22nd/24th president by walking through a park named after him and visiting sites associated with his early life, including his birthplace in Caldwell. Bring lunch, water, and insect repellant (we may be lucky and not need the last item in early September). 9/9 SUN, FANTASTIC HIKE USING 1 TRAM, 1 BUS, WALKING OVER 2 BRIDGES AND VISITING 2 SCULPTURE GARDENS. 4 miles with unusual transportation:. We’ll take the Roosevelt Island tram, bus through Roosevelt Island community, walk over the 36 Ave pink bridge to Long Island City, go to the Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park to see huge sculpture and return by walking over the Queensboro Bridge. Great photo hike! Bring lunch and water. Meet at bottom of steps leading to the Roosevelt Island Tram at 59th Street and 2nd Ave at 12 noon. Cost: MetroCard, bus 25¢ or 10¢ seniors (exact change). 9/9 SUN, HISTORIC CEDARMERE/WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT PRESERVE, Roslyn, L.I. Easy 5-6 mile late walk. Visit the poet quarter with lovely pond and gardens. Then a short climb to the preserve to stroll through the beautiful grounds. See the lovely Clayton Formal Gardens, a lake and sculptures. Visit the Tee Ridder Miniatures Museum and the Nassau County Museum of Art. Very unusual! Very scenic. Bring lunch/plenty water, and insect repellent. NO SMOKING ON HIKE. Take #7 train to Flushing, Main Street, last stop and walk to Bus Stop N20 past Macy’s on Roosevelt Ave. Bus leaves at 11:00 AM to Clock Tower Stop. Fare: use your MetroCard. 9/9 SUN, EAST RIVER WALK, 5 miles, level path. Observe fish, flower displays, tropical birds. Walk along East River to South Street Seaport. Bring lunch, water and sunscreen. Meet at 12:45 pm in front of Rusk Institute at 400 E 34th Street. Take any train to 34th Street and crosstown bus to 1st Ave. Leaders: Sam and Esther Dorfman, NO CALLS. Rain cancels. Joint hike. 9/9 SUN, RYE PLAYLAND Road & Park Walk, 8 miles, level - Easy summer afternoon walk on a portion of the Westchester Shore; quiet suburban roads, Reade Preserve & that 1920's Amusement Park and Beach. Start and finish at Rye RR Sta. Bring water & lunch; snack bar food available near end of hike. GCT take 11:34 AM to Rye (arr.12:19) New Haven Line; drivers park in Rye Commuter Lot. 9/15 SAT, PASSAIC RIVER RUTHERFORD TO HARRISON, NJ. About 10 flat miles, steady, moderate pace. Walk through parks along the Passaic River and on suburban streets from Rutherford, ending in Harrison. Return via PATH from Harrison. Bring lunch and water. Take NJ Transit bus 191 from PABT (use restrooms there) at 9 am to Rutherford, bus stop at corner of Marginal Road and Park Ave. (bus scheduled for this stop at 9:23 am). 9/15 SAT, HISTORICAL PS BUILDINGS OF BROWNSVILLE, EAST NY AND CROWN HEIGHTS, about 10 miles. This walk looks at schools designed by architect Charles B.J. Snyder, Supt of School Building from 1891 – 1923. Replacing the factory/prison approach to education, his buildings embodied contemporary educational-reform concepts about light, fresh air, and play space for children coming out of crowded tenements. He saw schools as civic monuments. Meet at 10 am at Pennsylvania Ave entrance to William Maxwell HS, at the C-train Liberty Ave stop. Bring or pick up lunch; frequent dropping off points. 9/16 SUN, RED HOOK TO CHINATOWN VIA THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE, 8 miles, moderate steady pace, some ups/downs, very industrial city walk. We’ll walk through Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, & on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. Take F or G subway to Smith-9th Street and meet 11:45 AM outside station. 9/22 SAT, VAN CORTLANDT PARK TO YONKERS, 6 miles, moderate steady pace. We’ll walk on the Putnam Trail to Tibbetts Brook and then to Yonkers. Bring lunch/water. Rain cancels! Meet at 242nd Street and Broadway, park side, at 12 noon. Take #1 subway to last stop in Bronx. 9/23 SUN, DUTCH BROOKLYN CHURCHES HISTORIC WALK, approx. 9 miles, moderate steady pace, drop off points. A history lesson about three Dutch churches. Arrive early, have lunch & use bathrooms in McDonald’s (Church & Nostrand Avenues). Meet 12:30 PM (after lunch & BE PROMPT) outside McDonald’s. 9/28 FRI, MT. IVY TO TUXEDO, 8 miles, moderate, a few hills. Diagonally through Harriman Park, not difficult for real hikers. Bring lunch & 2 liters of liquid. Rain does not cancel! Meet 8:30 AM at white commuter statues first floor of PABT. We will take a bus to Mt. Ivy and return either by train or bus. It is not necessary to register for this hike. 9/29 SAT, SOUTH FERRY TO CHELSEA, 3+ miles, flat terrain, easy pace. Walk along a refurbished Westside waterfront, visiting Teardrop Park, the Irish Hunger Memorial & other points of interest. Lunch at Chelsea Market. Continue afterwards with exploration of selected Chelsea landmarks, including the west Chelsea art gallery district. Meet in front of South Ferry Terminal in Lower Manhattan (#1 IRT, BMT Whitehall or #4 Bowling Green nearby) at 10:30 am. Leader: Devra Zetlan (212-662-8922). Nonmembers: $3.
9/29 SAT, REEVES MEADOW CIRCULAR, 8 miles, steady pace, 1200 ft altitude gain, some scrambling and 1 long sustained climb, trails, stream crossing. Come for an early autumn walk in the woods and enjoy early foliage. We’ll follow Stony Brook (a picture perfect mountain brook) up to the Cascade of Slid (rock scramble), climb Diamond and Halfway mountains for beautiful views of Lake Sebago and Pine Meadow Lake. Then down to Pine Meadow Lake and perhaps a trip to The Egg before returning to Reeves Meadow. Take 9:10 am Short Line bus from Port Authority to Sloatsburg (arr. 10:07), leader will meet bus in Sloatsburg. Leader can provide car shuttle to Reeves Meadow (and return to Brooklyn) for 4 people, other hikers who can give rides please advise leader. CALL OR E-MAIL TO REGISTER. 9/29 SAT, WATERFRONT FROM SEA BRIGHT TO LONG BRANCH, 7 miles, moderate, steady pace, mostly beach hiking. Bring lunch, lots of water, sun protection, extra layers of clothing. Hiking boots or sturdy shoes recommended. Bad weather cancels. Meet at the NJ Transit ticket window near 7th Ave entrance in NY Penn Station at 10:45 am for the 11:07 am North Jersey Coastline train to Red Bank, (arr 12:21 pm). Quick lunch in Red Bank outside Riverside Gardens Park, then 12-min bus ride to Sea Bright. From there to Long Branch, hiking mostly on firm sand near ocean’s edge. Return via train from Long Branch to Manhattan about 6:45 pm. Fare: about $18.75, seniors less. In addition, local bus for $1.95/.90. Leader: John Carr (347-886-3070). Joint hike with other clubs. 9/29 SAT, WEEHAWKEN TO WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, 10 miles. Ascend Palisades, follow ridge to North Hudson Park, descend and continue north on Hudson River waterfront walkway to GW Bridge. Cross into Manhattan. Late lunch at Mitsuwa Japanese food court or bring own. Bring water. Rain cancels. Meet at Ferry Terminal at Hudson River and W 39th Street ticket window at 10:15 am prompt. 9/29 SAT, MT. LORETTO & MONARCH BUTTERFLIES. See this State conservation area with woods, ponds, and beach. Bring lunch and water. Take 10:30 am SI Ferry from Manhattan. Meet leaders in SI promptly at the SIRT (train) station in the rear of the ferry terminal. We will take S78 bus to Richard Street. Drivers or those not coming from Manhattan call for instructions. 9/30 SUN, GARRET MOUNTAIN TO PATERSON, NJ. 6-7 miles, up and down on trails, some possibly rough, and city streets – steady moderate pace. Walk all around Garret Mountain Preserve along the first Watchung Mountain, then on to Paterson where we will visit the Great Falls and the Historic District. Return by bus from Paterson. Bring lunch and water. Take NJ Transit bus 192 from PABT (use restrooms there) at 9 am to the last stop in Clifton – corner of Valley Road and Fenner Ave (scheduled arrival 9:44 am).
